Fairlife Core Power Elite Chocolate Review
Flavor
We poured the first bottle into a tall glass to see the color, deep chocolate brown, with a slight foam on top after the shake. First sip read as real chocolate milk, not 'chocolate-flavored.' The cocoa is the lead note, dairy creaminess underneath, and the sweetness is dialed back compared to Premier Protein or Muscle Milk. By the time we finished the bottle, we genuinely wanted another, which is more than we can say for most 40g+ shakes that turn chalky after the first half.
Texture
Smoother than expected for 42g protein in 14 ounces. Creamier than OWYN or Orgain, but lighter than full-fat dairy. We shook each bottle before opening and got zero protein graininess, no chalk, no settling at the bottom. After leaving one in the fridge for four days, the texture stayed consistent, no separation.
Sweetness Level
Moderate-low. Sucralose + acesulfame K provide enhancement on top of natural lactose. Less artificial sweetener bite than Premier Protein. We finished each bottle without the sugar fatigue we usually feel halfway through a sweeter shake.
Best Time to Drink
- Post-workout (within 2 hours)
- Pre-bed (the casein component supports overnight muscle protein synthesis)
- Mid-afternoon when you need 40g+ protein in one hit
- As a meal-replacement when whole food isn't accessible
After Four Days of Drinking This
We drank one bottle a day for four days, post-workout. Quick notes from each day:
- Day 1: novelty hit. Tasted like a treat after the gym
- Day 2: still good. Pairing it with a banana made a real meal-substitute lunch
- Day 3: noticed the cost. $4.50 per bottle adds up if we drink one daily
- Day 4: zero GI issues despite the lactose-free filtration. We have one lactose-sensitive tester on the team and they had no problem either
- Repeat purchase verdict: yes for post-workout days, no for daily casual drinking. We'd save Elite for high-output training and keep cheaper 30g shakes for the rest of the week
Ultra-Filtration: How Fairlife Hits 42g
Fairlife's manufacturing process separates raw milk into its core components using a series of filters:
- Microfiltration removes bacteria
- Ultrafiltration concentrates protein and removes most lactose
- Recombination at desired protein-fat-carb ratios
The result is milk with roughly double the protein and half the sugar of regular milk, without any added isolates or concentrates. The protein is still milk protein, naturally a 80/20 casein/whey blend, which means you get both fast (whey) and slow (casein) digesting protein in one drink.
This matters because whey alone hits muscle protein synthesis fast then drops off, while casein sustains MPS for 4-6 hours. The combination outperforms either alone for total daily MPS, especially when consumed before sleep.
For per-meal protein theory and how the leucine threshold works, see how to hit 30g protein without a shake and protein quality score explained.

How Core Power Elite Compares

Fairlife wins on absolute protein. Premier Protein wins on calories per gram. Plant-based eaters should compare against our OWYN Pro Elite review.
Who Gets the Most Value
Athletes during training blocks, anyone running 4×40g protein meal distributions, and lactose-sensitive consumers who can't drink standard whey shakes. It's overkill for casual gym-goers who only need 20-25g per shake, they can save money on Premier Protein.
