Fairlife Core Power Elite Chocolate: 42g Protein RTD Shake Review

Fairlife Core Power Elite Chocolate 14oz protein shake bottle with condensation on a kitchen counter, with a tall glass of poured chocolate shake beside it for the 42g protein review
8.9

Quick Answer

Fairlife Core Power Elite Chocolate delivers 42g protein in a 14oz bottle for 230 calories. The highest-protein mainstream RTD shake in US retail, with ultra-filtered milk protein for clean lactose-light digestion.

  • 42g protein per 14oz bottle, 230 calories, 7g sugar
  • Ultra-filtered milk (whey + casein blend), slow + fast protein release
  • Lactose-free filtration; widely tolerated even by lactose-sensitive drinkers
  • Best post-workout recovery shake; ~$4.50 per bottle

We bought a 4-pack of Fairlife Core Power Elite Chocolate from Target for $16.99, roughly $4.50 a bottle. On the shelf, the Elite line stands out for one reason: 42g of protein in a 14oz bottle, the highest of any mainstream RTD shake in the US. We chilled them overnight, then drank one a day for four days post-workout to see if the macro promise matches the actual drinking experience.

Here's how the Chocolate version tasted, how thick it actually pours, and whether it's worth $4.50 over the cheaper 30g shakes already in our fridge.

Product Snapshot

Fairlife Core Power Elite Chocolate is the gold-standard high-protein RTD shake. Best for post-workout recovery, athletes hitting daily protein targets, or anyone wanting the leucine threshold met in a single bottle.

Fairlife Core Power Elite Chocolate Review

Flavor

We poured the first bottle into a tall glass to see the color, deep chocolate brown, with a slight foam on top after the shake. First sip read as real chocolate milk, not 'chocolate-flavored.' The cocoa is the lead note, dairy creaminess underneath, and the sweetness is dialed back compared to Premier Protein or Muscle Milk. By the time we finished the bottle, we genuinely wanted another, which is more than we can say for most 40g+ shakes that turn chalky after the first half.

Texture

Smoother than expected for 42g protein in 14 ounces. Creamier than OWYN or Orgain, but lighter than full-fat dairy. We shook each bottle before opening and got zero protein graininess, no chalk, no settling at the bottom. After leaving one in the fridge for four days, the texture stayed consistent, no separation.

Sweetness Level

Moderate-low. Sucralose + acesulfame K provide enhancement on top of natural lactose. Less artificial sweetener bite than Premier Protein. We finished each bottle without the sugar fatigue we usually feel halfway through a sweeter shake.

Best Time to Drink

  • Post-workout (within 2 hours)
  • Pre-bed (the casein component supports overnight muscle protein synthesis)
  • Mid-afternoon when you need 40g+ protein in one hit
  • As a meal-replacement when whole food isn't accessible

After Four Days of Drinking This

We drank one bottle a day for four days, post-workout. Quick notes from each day:

  • Day 1: novelty hit. Tasted like a treat after the gym
  • Day 2: still good. Pairing it with a banana made a real meal-substitute lunch
  • Day 3: noticed the cost. $4.50 per bottle adds up if we drink one daily
  • Day 4: zero GI issues despite the lactose-free filtration. We have one lactose-sensitive tester on the team and they had no problem either
  • Repeat purchase verdict: yes for post-workout days, no for daily casual drinking. We'd save Elite for high-output training and keep cheaper 30g shakes for the rest of the week

Ultra-Filtration: How Fairlife Hits 42g

Fairlife's manufacturing process separates raw milk into its core components using a series of filters:

  1. Microfiltration removes bacteria
  2. Ultrafiltration concentrates protein and removes most lactose
  3. Recombination at desired protein-fat-carb ratios

The result is milk with roughly double the protein and half the sugar of regular milk, without any added isolates or concentrates. The protein is still milk protein, naturally a 80/20 casein/whey blend, which means you get both fast (whey) and slow (casein) digesting protein in one drink.

This matters because whey alone hits muscle protein synthesis fast then drops off, while casein sustains MPS for 4-6 hours. The combination outperforms either alone for total daily MPS, especially when consumed before sleep.

For per-meal protein theory and how the leucine threshold works, see how to hit 30g protein without a shake and protein quality score explained.

Flavor Accuracy, Mouth Feel, Nutrition, Taste & Value

Flavor Accuracy: Authentic dark cocoa, restrained sweetness

Mouth Feel: Creamy without heaviness, smooth throughout

Nutrition: Top of the RTD category at 42g protein

Taste: Less candy-sweet than Premier or Muscle Milk

Value: Premium pricing justified by protein density

Buy This Shake If:

  • You want 40g+ protein in a single bottle without mixing powder
  • You're lactose-sensitive but tolerate lactose-free milk

Skip This Shake If:

  • You're vegan or fully dairy-free (try OWYN Pro Elite instead)

  • You're sensitive to sucralose or acesulfame K
  • Your budget is under $3.50 per bottle

Who Gets the Most Value

Athletes during training blocks, anyone running 4×40g protein meal distributions, and lactose-sensitive consumers who can't drink standard whey shakes. It's overkill for casual gym-goers who only need 20-25g per shake, they can save money on Premier Protein.

What We Think About Fairlife Core Power Elite Chocolate (42g)?

After four days post-workout, we'd buy Fairlife Core Power Elite Chocolate again, but we'd ration it for hard training days. The 42g protein from ultra-filtered milk delivers genuine recovery and tastes like an actual treat. At $4.50 a bottle though, daily use gets expensive fast. Worth the premium for serious athletes. Casual gym-goers can save money on Premier Protein at 30g without sacrificing much daily MPS.
